Heroes of Might and Magic III  → Overview

by GhostWriter

Heroes of Might and Magic III: Restoration of Erathia

Heroes of Might & Magic III: Restoration of Erathia was released in February 28, 1999 and is a dramatic evolution from both Heroes of Might & Magic I and Heroes of Might & Magic II. The basic gameplay remains the same in that you have to acquire gold and resources to build up your town(s) to produce enough creatures to give to your hero(es) so they can explore an adventure map and defeat wandering stacks, enemy heroes, and take over their castles. The differences, however, are what make Heroes of Might & Magic III interesting and fun.

Adventure

Heroes of Might & Magic III consists of seven campaigns in the lands of Erathia after King Gryphonheart of Erathia dies. Queen Catherine of Enroth is the daughter of King Gryphonheart and married to King Roland who was in Heroes of Might & Magic II. She returns to Erathia to handle the situation but learns on the boat trip that her father's death might not have been an accident. Because of the power void in Erathia, the surrounding countries decided to take some of Erathia for themselves. Queen Catherine will have to not only find out what happened to her father but keep the borders intact.

The seven campaigns are as follows.
  1. Long Live the Queen consists of three maps and pits your Castle forces against the Dungeon forces as you land on the beaches of Erathia and push your way inward. This is a speedy campaign.
  2. Dungeons and Devils consists of three maps which you use Inferno forces in the first (kill Elven dragons), Dungeon forces in the second (invade Erathia from the underground, and you can pick which one in the third as you take over the capital of Erathia, Steadwick.
  3. Spoils of War consists of three maps and shows fighting taking place between the Fortress and Stronghold troops with you playing a Mercenary. The first maps has you working for the Fortress, the second for the Stronghold, and the third on the side of your choosing.
  4. Liberation can only be played after maps 1-3 are completed and consists of four maps and you can play map 2 or 3 in either order. You start out by retaking Steadwick, join forces with Rampart to fight against Inferno towns, join forces with Tower to fight against Fortress, and finally fight against the Dungeon forces that buried from Nighon to Erathia with Castle, Rampart, and Tower forces.
  5. Long Live the King can only be played after map 4 is completed and consists of four maps which are somewhat of a prequel as it follows the Necromancer's plot to kill King Gryphonheart.
  6. Song for the Father can only be played after map 5 is completed and consists of three maps which unites the Necromancers with Castle, Rampart, and Tower troops to kill the undead King Gryphonheart and bring peace to Erathia.
  7. Seeds of Discontent is a bonus campaign and can only be played after map 6 is completed. Years ago both Erathia and AvLee fought over some land in the Timber Wars and now the people who live in area are going to fight for their independence.

Oh, I see a mistake here. In the RoE campaigns, once you clear campaigns 1-3, campaigns 4 and 5 are unlocked. Here, it says the fifth one can only be played after the fourth, which I do not believe is true.

Thanks a bunch.

When you end an campaign in H3, you need to load the file you saved at the end and then continue on next campaigns.

Stupid policy, but there is no cure for that.

Oh, yeah, and since I am playing H3 right now, I wouldn't mind donating pics for you guys to use to make a creature list....

I have encountered a problem. I was playing H3, RoE, and I wanted to unlock the other campaigns. So I beat all three of the first campaigns, but because I did not beat them all at once or something it won't unlock the secret campaigns. The game must know that I beat all three because it is in the high scores section. I have a save that shows two check marks on two of the campaigns, but not the third, then when I beat the third it had a check but the other two did not. What did I do wrong?

There is a nice setup on he Heroes 3 creatures from levels 1 to 7 on http://web.archive.org/web/20010310025308/www.mmportals.com/h3/

I suggest we copy the database and then place it here with some credits to the former Porta of Might and Magic. Otherwise, i'll do that myself on my (er... our) site.
