Knight/Castle/Haven Music Evolution

Unread postby Shyranis » 23 Aug 2009, 02:55

The first of my series is with the most vanilla faction and the one that is most often picked as the series protagonist. =D

Heroes 1

Heroes 2

Heroes 2: Price of Loyalty

Heroes 3

Heroes 4

Heroes 5

Which one do you like best? ^_^

Yes, votes for nostalgia DO count!

I Voted for H5. That's not to say I don't like the other themes.

The H1 theme sounds a little too 'renaissance faire' to me. H2 theme is great, but takes a while to get started. Because I can usually complete my building and hiring in the first 15 seconds, I never really get past the piano intro in the game. The H2 Price of Loyalty track is smooth and relaxing but not very powerful. H3's theme is also quite nice, but not powerful. H4's theme is not my favorite because it's kind of droning and sleepy.

So it really came down to H2 vs. H5 for me. Both are loud, bombastic, haunting, and really very well composed. But for me, H5 is the one that gives me goosebumps. I think the difference is that H2 has a lot of very good town themes so the Knight theme doesn't particularly stand out. But in H5, the Haven theme is hands down the most effective of all the town themes.

I was actually going to do a thread like this, but I guess it makes more sense that you did it because you actually posted the videos.

As for the Castle/Haven themes... I had some trouble deciding. Heroes 1 is obviously out, because it's MIDI, and Heroes III is also out since I have heard it a little too much (familiarity breeds contempt after all). So I voted for the Heroes IV theme, because I couldn't decide and picked one randomly.
Back from the dead? Maybe.

Heroes 2:PoL
When I heard it for the first time, I was just sitting and listening to it to the end until I continued playing.

Would it surprise you to hear that I voted for Heroes III Castle theme?
What else would "another Castle lover" possibly vote for?

Voted HoMM IV. I like that it's slow and contemplative.

My second choice would be HoMM I - the music, like the artwork, is cheerful, a complete opposite to, say, HoMM V, which would be my third choice.

I don't really enjoy the old Knight themes, despite loving almost everything from the other factions and adventure maps.

I'm sick of hearing the Heroes III theme, having listened to it on-and-off for nine years. It's nice but I don't consider it a favourite.

Heroes IV sounds great. I feel it's a bit too melancholy, which does make sense given the theme of the game, but it's pretty memorable. It doesn't get my vote though.

The Heroes V theme has it all as far as I'm concerned. Pity the Heroes V Haven itself is clearly anything but appropriately glorious - a populace of brainless, overzealous mass-murderers according to the campaigns :ill:

I voted H1. The nostalgia factor is too great to avoid.

H3 - nothing special in this one.

HIV - I HATE this theme (same for Preserve) - especially for singing.

HV - sounds familiar to HIV - its starts with good thme but later it becoming annoying. Good I can easy mod and change it for something else. ;P

H2:PoL - I love this theme but... it is not Knight theme but H2 theme played IIRC in H2 menu (you can hear it also in one location of MM9 ;)).
Or it was midi sound for something else...?

So H1 or H2? I think H1 will win - it has more Medieval sounds (and no annoying singing ;P).

Went with H1. Not only one of the better Haven themes, but also the best theme in H1.

As much as I hate the HV theme for having some latin text in it, I just can't get enough of it. It just has a certain strange touch of music that I never heard before in a fantasy setting like this.....

HoMM1 gets my vote. It's very memorable, and fits the HoMM1/Terra cartoonish theme, yet it's still majestic enough. It seems as if the lords of this land actually care about their peasants, even if they are nobles.
HoMM4 I don't like, just like Avonu. Preserve doesn't bother me that much, though.
HoMM5/2 were nice, but church music... They could have left that out.
HoMM2:PoL is cheap, that's the victory theme :P
HoMM3 is nothing overly special.

Heroes 5 finally reaches a good level of epicness. The previous ones were either too folky or too serene, in my opinion.
